Summer is finally here- in the UK that doesn’t always mean we’re guaranteed sunshine, but while there’s every chance we’ll get weeks of rain, there’s one thing that we can look forward to with a degree of certainty; a summer of music. Festival season has arrived, and this is something the UK does very well. After two years of COVID restrictions, to have our summer music scene back in full swing is a most welcome thing, sure to liven up the soggiest of days.
With this in mind, you might be starting to plan your wardrobe for those musical weekends, and while we all know a pair of hunter wellies are a staple to help you deal with the inevitable mud, what about your tights? Whether you’re opting for a cute pair of short shorts, a light summery dress, or a tight fitting mini skirt, a good selection of hosiery should be an essential part of your outfit, especially in the evenings when it can still get a bit chilly. We’ve put together a fun guide to some of the biggest festivals happening this year, the styles that go along with the different genres of music, and the best tights you can find to fit your look.

Glastonbury- The Hippy Chick
It’s an obvious one to start with, but there’s no denying that it’s the most famous of the UK festivals. Glastonbury caters for a huge array of musical tastes, with five main stages and a total of 31 different ‘areas’, featuring everything from grandma’s favourite, Paul McCartney, to rap artist Kendrick. This festival is so diverse it would be impossible to assign it a style, but if we were to pick the one which springs to most people’s minds when they think of Glastonbury it might be that of the hippy chick with her long flowing dresses and flowers in her hair. While such a style might usually call for bare legs and even maybe bare feet, let’s be a little more realistic and remember that if she’s being practical, the Glastonbury hippy chick might need those trusty wellies and most definitely a nice pair of tights for those chilly evenings sat around in the acoustic tent. For this look you’ll want something that compliments your pretty, flowing floral dress and flowery head crown, so something a bit more subtle is called for. You don’t want to overdo it and end up looking like a walking flower bed! Something in a nude shade would compliment all that flora and allow you to keep the illusion of bare legs. Tiffany Quinn do a beautiful pair in nude as part of their platinum range. They’re 15 denier and made with a microfibre so they’re perfect for summer! If you’re into this vibe, chances are you’re also quite conscious about the environment, so a good choice might be a pair of recycled tights from Charnos’s ‘Eco’ range. Also available in nude you can keep the bare leg look and do your bit for the planet. Now don’t forget your wellies!

Download- The Alternative Rocker
Download is possibly the most well known alternative music festival in the UK. Held in Donington Park it is the place to go for all your rock, metal, industrial and punk bands. With the likes of kiss, Iron Maiden and Korn all playing this year there is no better place for alternative music. As with Glastonbury, you’re sure to see a range of styles on show, but this is a festival where you can really have some fun with your look. Grab some eyeliner, backcomb your hair, and dig out your favourite band T-shirt (it’ll probably have a skull on it somewhere right? And if it has that ripped and worn in look then all the better!). The rock chick will probably be wearing some kind of short, tight fitting skirt in denim, maybe leather, or possible a pair of short shorts adorned with chains. There might be a cut off denim jacket with band patches involved too. With this look you can really go bold with your tights. Pamela Mann do a whole range of alternative tights, and they are fabulous! From skulls, to dragons, to classic fishnets, there is something to cater for every alternative rocker’s outfit, just take your pick! Personally I love the ‘alchemy raven over knee’ and the ‘see, hear, speak no evil’ skull designs. This range truly has something to cater for every alternative rocker, from goths to metal heads to punks. And chances are if you’re going for this look you’ll already have factored in a big pair of boots, so you don’t even need to worry about the wellies!

Field Day- The Raver
If you love electronic music then you might find yourself in Victoria Park in London, where this year you can catch the likes of The Chemical Brothers and Kraftwerk 3D. Electronic and techno music has come with some bold fashion choices over the years and it can be an opportunity to really express yourself in a fun and out there way. Think bright neon colours, glow sticks, florescent face paint. The nineties really was the heyday of this genre, so why not look to that decade for inspiration and bring in a touch of nostalgia. Short shorts complete with reflective detail will give you the freedom to really let loose with your dance moves, paired with a crop top as all that jumping about is likely to get you very hot. There are no rules with this style- colours and patterns are vivid and often clash so when choosing your tights you can really go wild. Gipsy’s ‘coloured opaque’ range would work well in vivid shades like yellow and Fuchsia. Snag also do a range which are perfect for this look- brightly coloured tights adorned with care bears and My Little Ponies. Now that really does capture the nineties rave vibe. And as for the wellies? If it rains you might just have to get wet feet, I don’t think a pair of hunters really go with this look…
Whatever your musical taste, and whatever your style, we hope you all have fun and enjoy the return of festival season. The important thing to remember when heading off for the weekend is just to be you, and remember, whether you’re a punk, a goth, a raver, a hippy chick or just doing your own thing, there’s a perfect pair of tights out there for you!
